I just cut another load of wood for my fire. We have burned a lot the last few weeks and the pile was low. The fire is growing strong now and I have enough to last through this cold spell. I have discovered in my family that everyone wants a fire but no one wants to cut wood. There is an important principle about fires: no wood = no fire.
Such is true also with romance.
Valentines is a good time to remember that keeping the romance alive in a marriage is intentional and deliberate. We must communicate our love in tangible ways. The special acts and words between husband and wife keep the fire of romance alive. Again, everyone wants a fire but no one wants to cut wood. Everyone wants a marriage that is filled with deep love, meaningful conversation and gestures that make the other feel special and important. You do not have to put out a fire - it will eventually die on its own. You do have to keep a fire going. A good fire needs tending.
Such is also true in our relationship with Christ. Bible study, prayer, worship, fellowship and ministry are all important to the health of our Christian life. They are the wood that keeps the fire burning. Everyone wants a close walk with the Lord but few invest the time and habits to nurture that relationship. If there is no wood there will be no fire.
My house and family are warm today because I cut wood. I am thinking now about the other "fires" in my life and how I might stoke the flame. God bless you, as well, as you keep those important flames hot and glowing.
